About Aakansha Sharma

Aakansha Sharma is a counsellor who combines practical experience with specialist training to support people facing trauma, addiction, family difficulties and mental health challenges. She describes herself as understanding, patient, empathetic, friendly and a good listener, and she uses these qualities to build a collaborative, client-focused working relationship.

Her clinical work draws on Cognitive Behavioural Therapy to help clients recognise and reframe unhelpful thought patterns and develop more positive behaviours. She also uses a person-centred approach to help individuals identify their strengths and areas for growth, and she integrates therapies such as Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing, Dialectical Behavioural Therapy and mindfulness-based techniques according to each client’s comfort and needs.

Aakansha completed a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology at the University at Buffalo, The State University of New York in 2012, and went on to study for a Masters in Guidance and Counselling at James Cook University, Singapore, graduating in October 2016. To meet her course requirements she completed an internship at NuLife Care and Counselling Services, where she worked with clients aged from 8 to 40 years on issues including childhood trauma, domestic violence, health-related difficulties and substance misuse. Between 2013 and 2015 she worked at the Centre for Psychotherapy and led drug intervention workshops at Changi Prison, Changi Women’s Prison and Tanah Merah Prison, as well as youth-focused workshops in collaboration with the Ministry of Social and Family Development and the Central Narcotics Bureau.

To gain further experience with children and adolescents she joined Lindamood-Bell Learning Processes in 2017 and completed an MSc in Child and Adolescent Mental Health at King’s College London in December 2019. Therapeutic approaches suited to online work

Many of Aakansha Sharma’s approaches translate well to remote sessions, making it possible to work on thinking patterns, emotional regulation and past trauma from a distance. Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) focuses on identifying unhelpful thoughts and testing them against reality, helping clients develop practical coping strategies for anxiety, depression and stress-related problems. Client-Centred Therapy emphasises a supportive, non-directive relationship where the therapist helps clients explore their own strengths and make choices that align with their values, which is useful for issues like self-esteem, relationship concerns and life transitions. Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR) is used to process distressing memories and reduce their emotional intensity, often benefiting people who are dealing with trauma and abuse.

Finding the right therapeutic approach is a collaborative process. Aakansha works with clients to understand their goals, preferences and comfort levels, and she tailors techniques so that therapy fits each person’s needs rather than expecting clients to adapt to a single method.

Online therapy offers practical benefits such as greater flexibility in scheduling and the option to connect from home or another private space. Video calls, phone sessions, live chat and text-based messaging can accommodate different communication styles and life commitments, allowing registered professionals to offer consistent support even when in-person meetings are not possible.
